MJ Harper

Berlin based and Jamaican-born creative director, choreographer and multi-media artist MJ Harper has forged a path between fashion, the arts and dance. He has performed at museums worldwide including New York’s MoMA and London’s V&A and Serpentine Galleries. Alongside his personal work he has directed work for designers and brands including Stefano Pilati, Grace Wales Bonner, Gucci and Acne and has toured with dance companies Alvin Ailey II and Company Wayne McGregor.

His first full-length solo piece, “Arias For A New World,” received its official stage debut at the Berliner Ensemble in 2022 after Harper workshopped the piece as an artist in residence at Callie’s Berlin.

Bringing his acclaimed solo piece to London for its debut showing, “Arias For a New World” combines a range of influences, from Derek Jarman and Talking Heads to jazz legend Sarah Vaughn and his own Jamaican mother, exploring observations on motherhood and the beauty and complexity of feminine energy. Describing his own practice, Harper names it “Tanz Theatre for the Algorithmic Age”, Arias is a web of ritual, religion, eroticism, stories, voice, music, gesture and elegance bundled like a figurative sculpture and finding its expression on the stage.
