Social Distortion, formed in 1978 by Mike Ness, endured constant lineup changes, the collapse of the early L.A. hardcore scene, and Ness’s struggle with heroin addiction. After stabilizing long enough to release Mommy’s Little Monster in 1983, the band slowly evolved a sound blending punk with roots rock, country, and blues. Their commercial breakthrough came with the late-’80s and early-’90s albums Prison Bound, Social Distortion, and Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell, which produced MTV airplay and radio hits. Following hiatuses, new members, and the 2000 death of longtime guitarist Dennis Danell, the band continued recording and touring with refreshed lineups. By 2011, Social Distortion released Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes, showcasing a polished yet powerful sound under Ness’s production.
